Remembering David Tavares Founder, President and CEO - a visionary who put people first
It is with a broken heart that we announce the passing of our Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer, David Nicodemio Tavares, who lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday January 13, 2021, at the age of 73. We have not only lost a great leader but a faithful friend.
David was born on January 23, 1947 in the town of Feteiras, on the island of São Miguel (Azores-Portugal), to Jacinto Duarte and Maria da Luz Tavares and was the eldest son of five siblings.
David excelled in his academic endeavours and obtained a diploma specializing in electrical and mechanical engineering from the Escola Industrial e Comercial de Ponta Delgada. He interned at EDA – Eletricidade dos Açores to gain practical experience in the field and subsequently obtained employment with Portugal Telecom, which would inform his future career path.
He earned the admiration of his superiors and quickly became the youngest team leader to work on large scale projects in the Azores. The valuable lessons he learned about leadership and teamwork would resonate throughout his career and help him build the large organizations that exist today.
When David’s family immigrated to Canada in 1966, he was faced with the challenges of learning a new language and adapting to a new culture. His agility and interest in exploring all things new aided his assimilation and appreciation for the potential opportunities that lay before him.
Overcoming many hardships, not unlike other immigrants to a new country, David was determined to make a difference and a meaningful contribution to society. He was a visionary, a pioneer, and an entrepreneur. He founded several enterprises spanning the five decades of his career, with the most notable Tel-e Connect Systems, Tel-e Connect Investments, and GlobeStar Systems. He served communities and industries with a focus on customer service excellence, value-driven products, and services. The creation and development of Connexall was his greatest achievement and pride due to a marked difference it made in the technological evolution of health care. His belief that Connexall could help save lives fuelled his passion and dedication to development, with patients and families and front-line staff always in mind. David tirelessly sought innovation to promote availability of excellent health care to all.
He was a dedicated and caring leader who loved and respected his employees. He felt acutely responsible for their well-being and job satisfaction, which initiated company picnics, memorable team building excursions, and an open-door policy, giving direct access to anyone that needed to speak with him. He will be remembered by his employees for his kindness, compassion, and positivity.
David was recognized over the years for his visionary leadership and pioneering spirit by contemporaries and business colleagues who nominated him for awards such as the Ontario People’s Choice for the Innovation Award, the Canadian New Pioneer Entrepreneurship Award, and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal. He humbly accepted and appreciated the acknowledgments of his contribution to the Canadian business society. However, he was also deeply appreciative of his recognition awards in Portugal: The Autonomic Insignia of Merit, Industrial, Commercial and Agricultural [Insígnia Autonómica de Mérito Industrial, Comercial e Agrícola] by the Legislative Assembly of the Azores and the Commander Insignia of the Order of Merit of Portugal [Insígnia de Comendador da Ordem do Mérito].
David was always loyal to his roots and determined to create a lasting link with the Azores, where he was dedicated to providing employment and opportunities for young people.
He was courageous and adventurous throughout his life. He discovered a passion for airplanes and ultralights and obtained his pilot’s license in his 40s. He shared this passion with customers, friends, and family, making each moment memorable and special.
He was a dedicated and caring contributor to the community and society. He actively engaged with fundraising efforts for hospitals, sponsorships, churches, and community events.
David was a very unique man and will always be remembered for his kindness, charismatic personality, and incredible aptitude for business.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Anna and his children Daniel (Cheryl), Tracy, and Michael (Melissa). David will also be sadly missed by his seven grandchildren, Ethan, Sienna, Charlotte, Christian, Jacob, Arya, and Ryan; his sisters, Cremilde, Aurelia (Joe), Lucy (Sebastian); his brother Daniel (Lucia); his mother-in-law Bianca; his sisters-in-law Tina and Adrian (Mel); his nine nieces and nephews; and his extended family and friends around the world.
In response to all the requests to make a contribution in memory of David, we set up the David Tavares Tribute Fund. Please, see the link below. The family will be matching all donations received and will forward to a preferred charity in David’s name supporting cancer research.
